Basic Navigation Training - 4 students and Kevin with maps

Master the Fundamentals of Navigation: Join Our Basic Navigation Course for Beginners on Dartmoor

Embark on a journey through the beautiful Dartmoor landscape with our Introduction to Basic Navigation Skills or a Navigation Skills Refresher Course tailored to meet your needs. This course is led by either Kevin, a Mountain Leader and member of the Dartmoor Rescue Team, or Michelle, a Hill & Moorland Leader. Both Kevin and Michelle bring a wealth of experience from their extensive walking adventures in the UK and Europe, as well as their expertise in training and supervising Duke of Edinburgh Award expeditions. As qualified firstaiders, your safety is in capable hands.

Course Objectives

  • Gain confidence in using a map to navigate a route and enhance your overall walking experience.
  • Develop the ability to plan and follow a route safely and effectively through open moorland and countryside.
  • Learn to identify and safely recover from navigational errors.
  • Gain awareness of countryside access and the country code.

Course Content

  • Route planning
  • Understanding map scales, symbols, and contours
  • Relating physical features to the map
  • The navigation process, spotting mistakes, and relocation techniques
  • Introduction to GPS
  • Environmental knowledge

Requirements

Experience

No previous experience is required.

Fitness

A general level of fitness is required for a day’s walking on the moors. The approximate distance covered will be 6-8 km (3-4 km for half-day).

Age

Minimum age 14, unless accompanied by an adult.

Equipment

Maps and compasses will be provided.  Please bring waterproofs and sturdy footwear.  
Lunch is not provided.

Costs

Full Day

  • £120 – up to 2 participants
  • Additional participants £40 each
  • Maximum 8 participants

Half Day

  • £60 – up to 2 participants
  • Additional participants £20 each
  • Maximum 8 participants

Location

Starting from Riverside, or from Haytor or Postbridge information centers. Other locations on Dartmoor can be arranged upon request.

Duration

For an optimal experience, this course is designed as a whole day out on the moor. However, a basic level or refresher can be completed in half a day to suit your needs.
