Camping Essentials: Pet-Friendly Policy, Facilities, and Amenities for a Comfortable Stay

Campfires allowed

BBQs and campfires are permitted. We have firepits and fire baskets for you to use, and you are welcome to bring your own. BBQs must be raised off the grass and please do not have an open fire on the ground on any of the pitches. There is a shared open campfire by the river where you can meet and share stories other campers. Dry logs for your campfire are available to buy – sourced from our woodland.

Pet-Friendly 🐕

Dogs are welcome to stay for free on the campsite but must be kept under your control at all times so as not to disturb the free-range chickens, wildlife and other campers. For most dogs this will mean that they will need to be on a lead. Please pick up their poop from the camping field and gardens. Remember if you use biodegradable poop bags these can be disposed of in the compost loo.

Toilets and Showers

There are two family sized wet rooms and a separate flush toilet in the wooden cabin attached to the house. There is an “awesome” Treebog compost toilet and Treepee with handwashing facilities fed by a rainwater butt.

Plus, you can go for a quick dip, paddle or swim in the river and in the Summer, Moretonhampstead’s heated outdoor swimming pool is not far away or you can go further afield to try the pools at Bovey Tracey and Chagford.

The hot water in the shower block is primarily heated by solar thermal and photovoltaics and stored in our hot water tank, backed up by the boiler.  In peak times there can be a lag while the water in the tank reheats. So the best time to have a shower on a sunny day is late afternoon when we have a full tank of hot water!  The grey water and sewage flows straight to our septic tank.  Please use these responsibly to minimise the impact on the environment. Learn more about our water, heating and sewage system on our sustainability pages.

Campers’ Kitchen

We know it can be a pain to have to light the stove to get your morning cup of coffee or hot chocolate in the evening.  So there is a small camper’s kitchen with a kettle, microwave and washing up area just outside the showers.  Another washing up area with hot water is provided in the Hay Meadow.

And for the ultimate luxury treat yourself to a breakfast bap or even book a continental breakfast in the B&B.

Drinking Water

All our water comes from a borehole in the Hay Meadow. Our lovely Dartmoor spring water is filtered and UV treated on site. All water coming out of a cold water tap is drinking water and tastes much nicer than mains water. Please don’t buy bottled water to bring here.

Did you know that we are a Refill Station listed on Refill? Passing members of the public can come here and refill their water bottles.

A drinking water tap for filling large containers is in the car park area on the side of the shed.

Car Parking

Due to the sloping nature of the site it is not possible to have your car by your tent, you will be asked to leave it in the car park at the top of the hill.  For the same reason we are unable to accommodate camping in camper vans or caravans – there’s no level area to park on.  Sorry!  If you require a pitch at the top of the hill next to the parking area please let us know.

We have a selection of barrows. trolleys and sack trucks to help you carry your gear.  If you are on one of the smaller nearly wild pitches you will still have to carry your gear some of the way.

When you arrive please park facing the hedge.  Trust us – its much easier than trying to reverse up the hill, especially if the grass is wet.  Please check your arrival instructions carefully as at the start and end of the season we may ask you to park at the B&B rather than in the Hay Meadow.

How much does it Cost?

Family/Large Pitch

All the Hay Meadow and Nearly Wild family pitches are at least 5m square (some are much bigger, check out the descriptions of each pitch on the Hay Meadow and Nearly Wild Camping pages) and priced at £32/night for up to 4 people, with additional charges if more people. You can have a many tents/shelters as you want (provided they can be 3m apart and fit in the space) and hot showers are included at no extra charge.

Sustainable Travel Discount
