Dartmoor accommodation for the whole family
Dartmoor accommodation for the whole family
If you’re planning to spend your next family holiday on Dartmoor, you’re in for a treat. With wide open spaces to explore, beautiful rivers to splash in and some of the best family days out you could wish for, Dartmoor offers everybody the chance to be together and experience the type of holiday they enjoy. There are plenty of Dartmoor family days out available (we’ve listed a few below) but we all know the key to a happy family holiday is getting the accommodation right. With so many needs and tastes to cater for, that isn’t always easy.
How to find family accommodation on Dartmoor
When you’re planning for several generations, finding the Dartmoor location to suit the whole family can sometimes be tricky. Here at Riverside B&B and Wray Valley Camping we really do have something for everyone. With plenty of space, our own beautiful native woodland and even the pretty Wray Brook to explore, adventurers older and younger will find plenty to occupy themselves, leaving those who prefer a more relaxed approach to the outdoors plenty of time to sit back and listen to the birds sing.
Relaxing at Riverside B&B
Each B&B on Dartmoor is different, but we like to think Riverside B&B stands out from the crowd, not just because of its beautiful National Park location and easy road access but also because our camping areas and natural woodlands give our visitors so much space to explore and enjoy without even leaving our site.
All three of our B&B rooms and our spacious living area overlook our natural gardens and woods, giving those members of the family who need some indoor time plenty of opportunity to relax in comfort as they take in the views and watch the wildlife. And for those warmer days and evenings, our Dartmoor B&B also has a lovely deck area, which gives those for whom access to the campsite might be more difficult, the chance to enjoy being outside in their own way.
Our Riverside B&B is available all year round.
Camping in a Dartmoor Hay Meadow
For those members of the family who enjoy a real taste of outdoor life, we also have our Hay Meadow camping area. Each of our five well-spaced pitches is surrounded by hay meadow grasses and wildflowers as well as the butterflies and bees that enjoy them.
We want our campers to be as happy as our insects, so we’ve made sure each pitch and the field itself has plenty of space to play as well as access to washing up sinks, hot showers, conventional toilets and our eco-friendly compost toilet. The Hay Meadow camping area is a just a short grassy walk from Riverside B&B, perfect for when you want to get the whole family together for a picnic or an evening around the campfire.
Our Hay Meadow camping area is only available in the summer.
Nearly wild camping on Dartmoor
Every family has someone who really values their peace and quiet, and for those people, we have the perfect camping solution that allows them to be part of the family fun when they choose to but withdraw as they feel the need. Each of our nearly wild camping pitches has its own secluded area away from other campers. Set in the woodland and close to pretty Wray Brook, these pitches offer an experience that is very close to wild camping but allows you to choose your level of convenience with a tap, a sit-down loo and even hot showers and the campers’ kitchen available if you choose (additional fees may apply).
If your family includes a gnarly outdoorist or someone who just loves a bit of space, we’d be more than happy to help you choose the perfect nearly wild camping pitch to suit their needs. And if even these pitches offer too much in the way of luxury, we even have space for them to hang a hammock or rig a tarp shelter in the woods. All our nearly wild camping pitches are close to our Riverside B&B.
Nearly wild camping is available all year round.
Family fun at Wray Valley campsite and Riverside B&B
One of things we enjoy best about our family friendly accommodation on Dartmoor is watching our visitors enjoy themselves around our site. In the summer, the gentle Wray Brook provides endless entertainment for young ones and there’s lots of space to run and play. For those who prefer a more sedate outdoor experience, there’s plenty to see from the comfort of your chair or, when you do feel like stirring, we suggest you take your own dip in the brook, watch our chickens, wander up to the top of the camping field to admire our orchard, and ask us about our wood-fired pizza making and campfire cooking sessions.
Family walks on Dartmoor
Most people who visit Dartmoor want to go for a walk, but some legs inevitably enjoy walking further than others. At Riverside B&B and Wray Valley Camping, we have a traffic-free section of the Wray Valley Trail right on our doorstep, as well as some great ideas for walking routes that start here or nearby. If you’re looking for a child-friendly walk that will give little legs some exercise and excitement without tiring them too much, we can also suggest the following; all within a 20-minute drive of our campsite and B&B.
- Enjoy a picnic and a wander at Trenchford Reservoir
- Climb the ladder up Blackingstone Rock (not for the very young or faint-hearted)
- Discover the orchard and walled garden at National Trust Parke
- Marvel at Dartmoor’s famous Haytor Rocks
