Hammock Camping at Wray Valley Camping

A Unique and Immersive Experience

Nestled in the heart of Dartmoor, Wray Valley Camping offers a unique opportunity for outdoor enthusiasts to connect with nature through hammock camping. Our peaceful wooded area and selected pitches provide the perfect setting for a memorable and immersive experience under the canopy of trees.

Why Choose Hammock Camping?

Hammock camping is an excellent way to elevate your connection with nature, allowing you to sleep among the trees and fully immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and scents of the forest. In addition to this intimate connection with the natural world, hammocks are known for their cosy comfort, gently swaying with the breeze and providing a serene space for rest and relaxation.

How to Hammock Camp at Wray Valley Camping

To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, follow these simple steps:

Hammock in woodland
  1. Select your spot: Choose two sturdy trees in our designated wooded hammock area or on Charcoal and Fruit Cage pitches (one person only). If you’re sharing the Charcoal or Fruit Cage pitches with someone not interested in hammock camping, there is space to set up your hammock alongside a small tent.
  2. Secure your hammock: Use tree-friendly straps to secure your hammock, ensuring it’s not too high off the ground for safety.
  3. Protect from the elements: Set up a tarp or use a hammock with a built-in rainfly to shield yourself from rain and other weather conditions.

Benefits of Hammock Camping

  • Environmentally friendly: Hammock camping minimises your impact on the environment by reducing the need for ground-level campsites.
  • Lightweight and portable: Hammocks are compact and easy to pack, making them ideal for backpackers and campers on the go.
  • Immersive experience: Enjoy the sensation of being cradled by nature as you sleep among the trees, creating unforgettable memories and a deeper connection with the outdoors.

Requirements for Hammock Camping

  • A sturdy hammock: Choose a hammock with a weight capacity suitable for you, ensuring a safe and comfortable experience.
  • Tree-friendly straps or a hammock stand: These accessories will help you secure your hammock and protect the trees you’re using as support.
  • A tarp or rainfly: Ensure you’re prepared for all weather conditions with a weather-resistant cover for your hammock setup.

Potential Drawbacks of Hammock Camping

While hammock camping has many benefits, it’s essential to consider potential drawbacks before deciding if it’s right for you:

  • Temperature control: Sleeping in a hammock can be chilly, as there is no insulation beneath you. You may need to bring an underquilt, sleeping pad, or warm sleeping bag for added comfort.
  • Limited space: Hammocks are typically designed for one person, which may not be ideal for couples or families who prefer to sleep close together.
  • Lack of storage: Hammocks don’t offer much in the way of storage, so you’ll need to keep your belongings on the ground or in a separate pack.
  • Potential discomfort: Hammocks may not be as comfortable for everyone, especially those who prefer a flat surface to sleep on or suffer from back issues.
  • Location limitations: Hammock camping requires suitable trees or a hammock stand, which may not always be available at every campsite.
