Elevate Your Navigation Techniques: Expert-Led Intermediate Navigation Course for Exploring Dartmoor

Join Kevin, a Mountain Leader and member of the Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team, for an immersive intermediate navigation course designed to enhance your outdoor exploration skills. With years of experience walking in the UK and Europe, as well as training and supervising Duke of Edinburgh expeditions, Kevin is the perfect guide to help you confidently navigate and enjoy your walking experiences.

Course Objectives

  • Gain confidence in using a map to navigate a route and relish the walking experience
  • Develop the ability to plan a route, and follow it safely and effectively through open moorland and countryside
  • Learn how to use a compass and GPS navigation, particularly in poor visibility conditions
  • Gain the confidence to explore paths, tracks, and discover new places

Course Content

  • Detailed and complex route planning
  • Relating physical features to the map
  • Utilising a compass – understanding when and how to use it
  • Tactical navigation process, identifying mistakes, and relocation techniques
  • Using a GPS device effectively
  • Enhancing your environmental knowledge

Requirements

Experience

A basic understanding of maps and navigation, if in doubt do the Basic Navigation Skills course.

Fitness

A general level of fitness is required for a day’s walking on the moors.
The approximate distance covered will be 6-8 km.

Age

Minimum age 14, unless accompanied by an adult.

Equipment

Maps and compasses will be provided.  Please bring waterproofs and sturdy footwear.  
Lunch is not provided.

Location

Starting from Riverside, or from Haytor or Postbridge information centers. Other locations on Dartmoor can be arranged upon request.

Duration

This is a full-day course on the moor, so please bring a packed lunch to enjoy during the break.

  • £140 – up to 2 participants
  • Additional participants £50 each
  • Maximum 8 participants
