Night Navigation and Advanced Skills

Join our expert instructors, Kevin (Mountain Leader and member of Dartmoor Rescue Team) or Michelle (Hill & Moorland Leader), for a specialised course focused on enhancing your night navigation and advanced navigation skills. Both Kevin and Michelle bring extensive experience from walking in the UK and Europe and have a background in training and supervising DofE expeditions. As qualified first aiders, your safety is in capable hands.

Course Objectives

  • Gain confidence in navigating during poor visibility conditions or after dark
  • Understand the importance of timing and pacing techniques to aid navigation
  • Learn to apply tactical navigation methods for improved navigation
  • Develop the ability to identify and safely recover from navigational errors

Course Content

  • Understanding the differences between daytime and nighttime navigation
  • Utilising timing, pacing, and compass techniques
  • Appreciating contours and landforms for better navigation
  • Mastering safe recovery techniques in poor visibility conditions

Experience

You must be confident with using a map and compass in daylight

Fitness

A general level of fitness is required for walking on the moors. The approximate distance covered will be 3-4 km.

Age

Minimum age 14, unless accompanied by an adult.

Equipment

Maps and compasses will be provided.  Please bring waterproofs, sturdy footwear and a torch (ideally a head torch).  

Location

The course will be held at Mardon Down (near Moretonhampstead). Other locations on Dartmoor can be arranged upon request.

Duration

This course spans approximately 3-4 hours, taking place in the evening or after dark to ensure practical, hands-on experience.

  • £60 – up to 2 participants
  • Additional participants £20 each
  • Maximum 6 participants
